Numeracy Skills Appointments

Learning skills appointments for numeracy are up to 50 minutes one-on-one or small-group sessions available to students who would like help with the numeracy skills within their studies. These appointments are free and confidential.

What is Numeracy?

Numeracy is using mathematics effectively to meet the general demands of life. Almost every area of study at UTAS involves numeracy. Examples include:

  • Nurses must be able to use fractions, decimals and percents to deliver accurate dosages to patients
  • Psychologists must have a good grasp of probability to evaluate research data with treatment implications
  • Journalists need to be able to interpret numerical information and read graphs to write informed stories.

How can we support you with numeracy?

We can help you to apply maths within the context of your study and assignments.

This includes help with:

  • Calculations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Estimating - understanding approximation and comparing numbers
  • Understanding average
  • Converting units of measure
  • Understanding and using data represented in graphs and tables

What can't we help with in a numeracy appointment?

In working with you in a learning support appointment, we will not:

  • Do calculations for assignments for you
  • Provide support for advanced mathematical concepts such as trigonometry

How do I make an appointment?

One of the key aims of these sessions is to assist you in becoming an independent, self-directed learner. With this in mind, appointments are limited to four per semester for any one student, except with the approval of a Learning Skills Adviser.

Email student.learning@utas.edu.au to request a numeracy skills appointment.
