Study preparation programs
UTAS offers a number of enabling programs to assist students in preparing for university study.
UniStart
UniStart is a program that aims to help you to improve your tertiary literacy. It begins to develop the essential skills required for self-directed learning and success at university. These skills include:

critical thinking

academic reading
-
essay writing.
UniStart also offers an enrichment program that enables you to improve your skills in:

acclimatising to university
-
using the library
-
using computers effectively
-
using the English language at university level

oral communication
-
presenting to a class
-
working with groups.

The UniStart program begins with a 5-day program, delivered on campus (in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie) or by distance, in in the weeks before each semester commences (January/February and July). Both the on campus and distance offerings are supported by access to online materials.
UniStart:
-
is free to all UTAS students who are Australian citizens;
-
is offered on a fee-paying basis to International students;
-
carries no academic credit towards your degree;
-
is of particular benefit to adult learners and alternative entry students;
- is also a helpful introduction to learning and teaching at university level for school-leavers.

University Preparation Program
The University Preparation Program (UPP) is an enabling course primarily for people who intend to enrol in a tertiary course but who feel they need to build up their confidence and learning skills prior to starting tertiary study.

Pioneered and based in the north-west of Tasmania, UPP is offered statewide, is flexibly delivered and is of particular benefit to mature-aged and alternative entry students wishing to study at university. UPP offers students essential expertise as well as help in developing motivation and learning habits. Participants gain familiarity with a range of learning experiences such as:
Students can study individual units of particular relevance rather than the entire program. Subjects include:

academic reading

research and writing
-
information technology
-
bridging maths
-
study skills
-
communications.
A special feature of UPP is the option to undertake a 'taster' of a formal university unit.
UPP:
-
is a year-long bridging course;
-
has no course costs, but students pay a reduced Services & Amenities fee to the University;
-
carries no academic credit towards your degree;
-
is of particular benefit to mature-aged and alternative entry students.

Info Days
Another important way to find out more about university life and study is to attend a University Info Day.
UTAS opens its doors to the community for Info Days held at the Launceston, Hobart and Cradle Coast campuses in August each year. By attending an Info Day you can find out what happens at the University, review the excellent range of facilities available and discover what makes UTAS a truly distinctive university.

First Year at UTAS website
To help you make a successful transition to university, we have established a special website for students in their first year of study at the University. You can visit this site to receive regularly updated information about preparation for university, orientation and your first semester of study.
Once enrolled, you can also access CareerHub through the First Year at UTAS website. This site provides a wealth of information about careers, employers, workshops and other support services for students.
