How can I find out what is expected of me in the units in which I enrol?

In the first week of the academic semester you will be given a unit outline for each unit you are studying. The unit outline contains important information about your unit, so keep it in a convenient and safe place for ready reference.

The information in the unit outline will include most or all of the following:

  • the learning aims of the unit;

  • a summary of the curriculum to be covered;

  • the relationships to other program/s units if appropriate;

  • learning outcomes that students can expect to have achieved by the end of the unit, including generic attributes (see Generic attributes);

  • specific prior knowledge and/or skills relevant to the unit, other than the general prerequisites listed in the handbook;

  • learning resources required, e.g., required texts, recommended reading, e-resources, equipment & materials, computer hardware and software;

  • learning experiences, e.g., lectures, tutorials, workshops/seminars, online activities, videoconference activities, practical/laboratory sessions, field trips, practicum/work experience placements, occupational health and safety;

  • a unit schedule, which is a useful guide for students to plan their learning programmes and prepare for sessions;

  • learning expectations and strategies relevant to the unit;

  • assessment, e.g. tasks to be completed, word/page lengths, relationships to outcomes for unit, assessment criteria, and due dates (see the UTAS Assessment and Academic Integrity websites);

  • how your final results are determined;

  • how assignments should be submitted;

  • procedures for requesting extensions to due dates for assignments;

  • penalties that apply for late submission of assignments, for exceeding word limits and for failure to meet attendance/interaction requirements;

  • review of results and appeals;

  • academic referencing;

  • plagiarism (see the UTAS Stament on Plagiarism and Academic Integrity and visit the Academic Integrity website);

  • further information and assistance.
